What Is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is the provision of urgent dental care in an emergency when you have severely damaged your teeth or you are in chronic pain. Dental emergencies can include signs of an infection, a loose or knocked-out tooth, uncontrollable bleeding, severe toothache, chipped or cracked teeth, lacerations to the inside of the mouth, ulcers that won’t go away, or lost dental work.

All of these issues require immediate treatment to prevent worsening pain that can be debilitating and disrupt your daily responsibilities. Many oral health problems such as infections or knocked-out teeth also need to be tended to immediately tooth loss and health complications. Contact us at Collective Dentistry to schedule an emergency appointment.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Dental Appointment

Thorough Oral Exam

Dr. Smith will carefully examine your mouth to look for signs of blood, lacerations, damage to your teeth, and sharp edges that can cut the inside of your mouth. After having a discussion with you about the cause of the problem and what symptoms you are experiencing, he can diagnose the problem so we can get you the proper treatment. X-rays may be taken to look at the health of the underlying tissues.

Pain Relief

If you are in pain, we will provide you with pain relief. This may include administering local anesthesia for immediate relief or providing you with anti-inflammatory pain medication or antibiotics that will help with the pain of an underlying oral health condition. We will not leave you in pain so please inform us if you are experiencing discomfort.

Treatment Plan

Once we have diagnosed the problem and relieved your pain, Dr. Smith will formulate a treatment plan that will address any damage, oral health problems, or tooth loss that has occurred. This may only require a single appointment but some procedures will require multiple appointments to complete. If you come to the office with an infection, we can relieve your pain and remove the infection with a pulpectomy, but the canal cleaning and filling process typically takes 2 to 3 appointments.

Follow-Up Appointments

If you need further treatment, we will schedule your additional appointments and let you know what to expect, what to avoid, and how you can continue to relieve your pain.

Common emergency dental procedures include many different restorative treatments like root canal therapy to treat infections or extractions when the tooth cannot be salvaged. If you have a knocked-out tooth, we may be able to reattach it by stabilizing it with a tooth splint as soon as possible.

Damaged or broken teeth may be protected with dental crowns. If you have pain or other debilitating symptoms caused by impacted wisdom teeth, we can extract them. When a tooth is removed, we recommend replacing the tooth with a denture, bridge, or implant.

When an emergency happens, you don’t have time to shop around for dentists or see when a dental office can fit you in next, you need someone you can count on to treat you right now. At Collective Dentistry, we always leave space in our appointment schedule to accommodate emergencies so that you don’t have to wait another day to get relief or fix an urgent problem.

Emergencies happen when we least expect them, which is why it’s most important to have access to dental care outside of normal business hours. This is when an emergency is most likely to occur. Thankfully, at Collective Dentistry, we can offer emergency care after hours if you give us a call.

Our normal business hours are Monday to Friday, but we can offer weekend appointments in special circumstances such as a serious dental emergency that requires urgent treatment. If you need serious emergency treatment such as oral surgery, Dr. Smith will come into the office to accommodate you.

What Is Classed as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any dental situation affecting the teeth, gums, or oral cavity that requires prompt if not immediate, dental attention. These emergencies can arise from accidents, falls, or far-advanced dental complications.

Patients with dental emergencies should see emergency dentists right away before the situation spirals out of control. Examples of dental emergencies include knocked-out or fractured teeth, severe tooth pain, severe dental abscesses, jaw pain, and lost dental restorations.

Why Do You Need an Emergency Dentist?

An emergency dentist is a dentist that specifically deals with dental emergencies. Emergency dentists are usually available round the clock and are also available on weekends and holidays.

You’ll need an emergency dentist if you’ve accidentally knocked out your tooth or fractured it. You could salvage the knocked-out tooth if you see an emergency dentist an hour after knocking it out. An emergency dentist will also stop severe tooth pain from physical trauma or dental decay.

What Do I Do If I Crack or Chip My Tooth?

It’s absolutely important to maintain a level head after chipping or cracking your tooth. Keeping calm allows you to better handle the situation. After keeping calm, spit the broken fragments into a glass of milk. Use warm water to rinse your mouth and remove the tiny fragments.

Next, use a cotton ball to stop any bleeding and a cold compress to reduce any swelling. Contact your emergency dentist for an appointment and take OTC painkillers to manage the pain before getting to the dentist. Once you arrive at the dentist's office, the dentist will give you the appropriate treatment.

What Do I Do In Case of a Chronic Toothache?

In case of a severe toothache from a broken tooth or dental decay, use a cold compress to reduce any swelling. Next, rinse your mouth with a warm salt solution to kill bacteria and reduce swelling. After rinsing your mouth, apply baking soda paste (baking soda and water) gently on the affected tooth to neutralize the acidic environment and reduce pain.

You can also plop a few drops of clove oil on the affected tooth, or bite into a bulb of garlic. If the pain continues, consider taking OTC painkillers or using tooth gels for prompt relief. If that doesn’t help, contact an emergency dentist for professional dental assistance.

What Do I Do If I Have a Broken Tooth?

The first thing to do after breaking your tooth is to pick up and rinse the broken fragments of the tooth. Place these fragments in cold water or a glass of milk. Next, rinse your mouth with a warm water solution and apply an ice pack outside the affected area.

You’ll also want to take pain medication and give your emergency dentist a call. If you manage an appointment, carry the broken fragments to the dentist’s office for prompt treatment. The earlier you get there, the better for you.
